This score is part of the CDC assists the cruise ship industry by helping to prevent and control the introduction, transmission, and spread of gastrointestinal (GI) illnesses on cruise ships. It operates under authority of Public Health Service Act 42 U.S.C. Section 264.
Ships are inspected both periodic and unannounced with operational sanitation inspections and scheduled construction inspections. Monitoring gastrointestinal illnesses, investigating, responding to outbreaks and providing training to cruise ship employees on public health practices.
Cruise ships and line average using four comparisons listed below.
(OB Avg) cruise line total average across the line of cruise ships.
(Crew Avg) cruise line total crew average result during outbreaks
(Pax Avg) cruise line total passenger average result during outbreaks
(OB Total Avg) cruise line total average from sum of Crew Avg and Pax Avg.
Points are generated off initial base of 100, ships and lines with no outbreak are awarded full points. Ships in lines with outbreaks reduce each line point average as crew and passenger outbreaks occur.
Description of formula
Ship Points = Crew Avg + Pax Avg result in OB Total Avg - 100.
Line Points = Line Ship Averages, OB Crew + OB Pax result in Line Average OB Total - 100.
Rank = Sorting average points high - low, Sorting low - high is OB Avg, Crew Avg, Pax Avg, OB Total Avg.
